A Lesson in Loving Your Low-Paid Job

A Lesson in Loving Your Low-Paid Job Okay, lets just admit straight up that no one  loves a low salary. Working your buns off only to scrape by each month isnt anyones idea of love. Still, it doesnt mean you cant be in love with  your job. Just hear  me out. Money might make the world go round, but its not everything.  A huge salary, big house and mean-looking car would be great to have, but  those things wont  guarantee your happiness. The High Pay Centre has released a new report stating the average  FTSE 100 CEO earns £5.5 million a year. Thats quite a wedge, especially when you consider what the average employee is probably earning underneath them. Sure,  a bank full of big bucks might relieve financial stress, but  even the richest people in the world arent immune to worldly woes. If a dreary income has got you resenting your job, its time to find a new perspective. Your role might offer you a lot more than you think. If you can, try looking past your low salary for a minute and focus on the  other elements that make up your  current occupation. Enjoyment Have a look at your day-to-day work do you love what you do? If the answer is yes, sometimes  pursuing your  passion  as  a career means sacrificing a big salary. If you really love what you do, is the money really worth  worrying about? How lucky you are to enjoy your work thats more than what can be said for a lot of people.  Those who earn huge wages are often being compensated for doing work thats extremely stressful, time-consuming and laborious.  A lot of people do really love their work and are paid well, and well, thats the dream isnt it? On the other hand, if the answer is no, perhaps money isnt the real issue here, its your job satisfaction. Maybe its time to change careers  (and see whether more money might come with a change of scenery). Hours and days Have a look at the hours you work.  Do you get your weekends off? Can you clock off at 5pm, physically and mentally? Do you have time for a morning walk and coffee before work? Do you get flexible hours? Some people have to remain on call and make themselves available at only a moments notice. Others can never truly switch off from work, and worry about their work 24/7. Location Is your job local? Does not working in the city mean you can be home in under 10 minutes? Can you always find a park, or get a seat on the bus in the morning? Or perhaps  your job  is situated  away from home, some or all of the time? Do you get to visit new places, or travel with work? For some people, the location of their job is problematic for them and is an extremely stressful part of their career. How does yours stack up? Colleagues Do you love the people you work with? Do you enjoy their company, do they make you laugh? How about your boss. Is she / he supportive and understanding? Do they offer you chances to develop professionally, and take on more responsibility when you are performing well? Some people loathe their coworkers, and report to the nastiest of managers. Benefits How do your benefits look? Do you have a generous holiday allowance?  Do you get gym membership, or perhaps free breakfast on Mondays? What other non-monetary extras do you receive as part of your job?  Salary isnt always the only way for you to get ahead financially. Opportunities Is your job using your university degree? Does it offer you the chance to develop your skills and gain valuable experience which will set you up for your next move? If you have progression prospects and direction in your role, youre probably better off than a lot of people who dont quite know where their job is leading them. Fulfilment Do you feel you are helping people? Are you making a difference in peoples lives? Being fulfilled in your career is something that not everyone has the pleasure of feeling. While more  money would make life a lot easier, scoring a pay rise is  not always straight forward. Where possible, try to focus your attention  on the bits of your job you love.

5 Ways To Back Up Important Work Files

5 Ways To Back Up Important Work Files As agonizing as it can be to lose certain personal files such as old family photos or videos on your home computer as a result of a hard drive failure or software bug, the loss of work data can have much more profound consequences. You may have certain business contracts, invoices or entire projects on your PCs, Macs or other devices that you simply cannot afford to lose in any circumstances.  In that case, it makes  sense to investigate the many options available for backing up those invaluable files. Below, we have considered the merits of five of the most popular backup methods. Backing up to an external hard drive External hard drives are much like the hard disk drive already found inside your computer.  They tend to be small and portable enough to carry around with you.  Or even stow away in a desk drawer. Such a hard drive also tends to be very easy to use.  All that you should need to do is plug it in and then drag and drop or copy the files that you would like to back up from your computers main hard disk drive to the external hard drive. On the negative side, even external hard drives can fail unexpectedly.  Even if its rare these days for newer hard drives to fail completely, and if your house burns down or is robbed, you may lose both your original work files and the copies. Backing up over the web Various online services exist that give you a quick, convenient and affordable means of backing up your most important work files. All that you typically have to do is sign up to such a service, such as CrashPlan or Backblaze, agree to a low monthly fee and then download its software.  It runs in the background on your PC or Mac, automatically making copies of your files on the services web storage. In the event of the original files being lost, you will therefore be able to quickly restore them. While such online backup services are great for protecting you against whatever disasters may hit your original data, you do normally have to pay for them.  And the initial backup may take a while compared to the situation with an external hard drive, particularly if you have a large number of files. Backing up to the cloud While cloud computing platforms and services like Microsoft Azure, Dropbox and Google Drive may not be solely intended as online backup services, they can certainly serve that purpose, among many others. The principle behind cloud storage is simple.  You effectively rent server space in a data centre, well away from your home or work, as a place to store your files. All that you need in order to access, edit and share your cloud-stored files at any one time is an Internet connection.   Then, all such operations can be performed via a smartphone or tablet as well as from a desktop computer. Your may decide that your whole business, in fact, could benefit from migrating to the cloud.  That way you can take full advantage of its range of possibilities beyond rudimentary storage. However, you should ensure that the exact packages and solutions that you choose are a good fit for your business needs. Backing up to a flash drive These tiny drives and we do mean tiny, often measuring no longer than a stick of gum really do offer the ultimate in portability.  Most are even able to be attached to a keychain or lanyard. Flash drives resemble miniature external hard drives and offer many of the same advantages.  Except that as their name implies, they use flash memory, a storage chip that can be erased and reused. They are simply plugged into your computers USB port.  And then you can drag and drop files onto them via your machines usual interface. As a means of storing important work files, flash drives are compromised by the limited storage space that they offer compared to external hard drives.  Even the biggest drives typically only boasting 256GB of space. However, this is still usually enough for several thousand documents or photos. Backing up to a network-attached server (NAS) This form of file-level computer data storage server connected to a computer network has been popular since the mid-90s as a means of conveniently sharing files among multiple computers. An NAS may be an especially sound investment if you need to back up several PCs.  Thats  particularly true if online storage space for all of those machines work files is too expensive for you. However, when you are purchasing an NAS, you should make sure that the built-in software is capable of backing up multiple PCs and, ideally, your other devices as well. Dont be complacent about backing up your data! Rather than depending on just one of the aforementioned backup methods, it is strongly recommended that you use more than one.   Ideally draw upon both onsite and offsite backups. You may, for example, use an external hard drive at your home or workplace as your onsite backup method, and a cloud service like Google Drive as your offsite one. Whatever you do with your most important work files, by always having a well-considered plan for what you will do if those files are ever lost.  Then  you can ensure that you are strongly protected against the worst eventuality. But if youve decided that you arent cut out for surgery, emergency medicine or treating acute illnesses, it doesnt mean you cant work in medicine. Dentistry is an alternative field that many people who are interested in medicine consider. There is a range of roles you can train for, and you can treat people in an environment that isnt as high pressure as some others. If you want to work in a medical role and you love working with people, there could be a career for you in dentistry. From dentists to technicians, there are different jobs to suit your personality. You may also decide to work with dental health products, perhaps in sales, product development or another area. Qualifying as a dentist doesnt limit you to just one job, so there is room to explore your options. Dental Assistant It takes a long time to qualify as a dentist, and dental school is highly competitive. You may be more interested in a career thats more easily attainable. So you should be organized and have excellent communication skills. You can train to be a dental assistant through a program at a community or technical college. Courses often last nine to eleven months, but can be accelerated or longer, if taken part-time. At the end of the course, students need to pass an exam to show that theyre qualified. You can gain your qualifications at a community college, earning an associates degree so you can get licensure. You can also go to university to train as a dental hygienist, where you may be able to get a bachelors or masters degree. Dental Laboratory Technician If you prefer to work more behind the scenes, you might consider a career as a dental laboratory technician. Anyone who enjoys making things and is interested in the technical side of dentistry would enjoy this role. Dental technicians work with different materials, tools and equipment. They use them to create implants, crowns, dentures, and more. You could work with materials including wax, plastic, metals and even glass. In a way, working in a laboratory is both artistic and scientific. You perform a technical role, but there is also an element of being creative and making things. To become a lab technician, you should complete a course at a community, technical or vocational college. You can also go to a dental school.
